Dr Naomi Brewer joined the University of Suffolk as a Senior Research Fellow in March 2023. Naomi’s PhD (completed in 2011 at the Research Centre for Hauora and Health, Massey University, New Zealand) involved a series of epidemiological studies of cervical cancer survival in New Zealand. Naomi’s research interests are mainly focused on cancer epidemiology and health disparities, although she has worked on a variety of public health studies. Most recently, Naomi managed a randomised community trial (funded by the New Zealand Health Research Council) investigating the acceptability of self-sampling for human papillomavirus (HPV) testing for cervical cancer-screening amongst Māori, Pasifika and Asian women. Naomi is currently working on a programme of research exploring the deployment of Advanced Clinical Practitioners across the Suffolk and North East Essex (SNEE) Integrated Care System (ICS) in a collaboration with East Suffolk and North Essex NHS Foundation Trust (ESNEFT).

Naomi was a member of the Cancer Research Trust New Zealand Board of Trustees from 2021–2023 and a member of the grant Assessing Committee from 2016–2021. Naomi served on a New Zealand Health Research Council grant assessing committee in 2016 and 2017, and was a member of the Guideline Development Team for the 2008 ‘Guidelines for cervical screening in New Zealand’ with the National Cervical Screening Programme (Ministry of Health). Naomi was a member of the 2014 International Epidemiological Association (IEA) World Congress of Epidemiology Scientific Program Organising Committee, and was inaugural Chair of the IEA’s Early Career Epidemiologists Committee 2010–2014.
