Alec studied Chemical Engineering at Newcastle and Imperial College, obtained an MBA from the London Business School and a PhD in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Greenwich. He is a Chartered Engineer and a Chartered Scientist and Member / Fellow of IChemE, IMarEST, HEA, CMI, IAME, TEE etc. Served as visiting Professor of Ship Management at ALBA Graduate Business School, Greece, Frederick University, Cyprus, New York College (NYC) Greece and MSA University, Egypt. He has also been active as External Examiner to several Universities in the UK in the areas of Ship Management and Engineering Management.
Alec first made a mark in his mid-twenties by successfully running The Arab Investment Company’s corporate banking activities in Riyad, Saudi Arabia and increasing its profits from $7½m to $38m in the relatively short space of 2 years.
As a senior manager of Credit Commercial de France (now part of HSBC) he held several international banking posts in Paris, Bahrain, Athens and Luxembourg. In his role as manager of Ship Finance he was responsible for developing the Bank’s shipping loan portfolio providing credits for the acquisition of 180+ vessels by the Bank’s clients and facilitated private equity investments in the field of global logistics.
As Managing Director of Alco Shipping, he headed a firm, which has owned, managed and operated a total of 31 Ocean- Going vessels (both bulk cargo and tankers). Through its Luxemburg subsidiary, STIM S.A., the group also has provided consulting services to many international companies, financial institutions and investors involved in shipping, trade, logistics and asset finance.
As co-Managing Director of MDT Ltd and Epsilon Holdings Ltd, he inspired and supported the creation of a new manufacturing company specialising in high quality diamond tool and related sawing and drilling machinery.
Joined the University of Greenwich, having been awarded an EU research grant of £650K+. Appointed Senior Lecturer in Engineering Management, later promoted to Principal Lecturer for Excellence in Teaching (University ‘Teaching Fellow’) and became the Head of the Department of Applied Engineering & Management. He was a member of the University’s Academic Council and the University’s Court of Governors. Has acted as Director of Institute of Management, Greater Manchester (Bolton University) and is currently the Leader of Engineering Management at Chichester University.
Teaching subjects include Strategic Management, Accounting and Finance for Engineers, Commercial Management of Ships, Logistics and Supply Chain Management, Engineering Enterprise, Maritime Law & Marine Insurance, Maritime Economics & Business, Global Engineering, Environmental Engineering etc.
He has written an extensive number of articles, research and conference papers, book chapters and teaching handbooks on Ship and Port Management, Maritime Security, Marine Surveying and topics relating to Engineering Management such as Supply Chain Management, Logistics, Operations Management, Strategy and Education & Training.
