Overview

Public health is an important aspect of practice for all areas and disciplines of health. It is therefore fundamental that students have a thorough understanding of what public health is and to be aware of the scope of public health including its history, the main principles and some key concepts and this will be the focus of the first part of this module. Considering the scale of health issues that exist in society, it also critical to have an awareness and understanding of the wide range of influences on health and health inequalities that exist. Students also need to be able understand the importance of assessing health needs in populations and this module will comprehensively introduce students to the principles and conduct of health needs assessment. It is also fundamental to develop an understanding of epidemiology in public health as epidemiology is a key aspect in public health and the second part of the module will focus on this area which includes epidemiological principles, key measures and terminology, epidemiological study designs, critical appraisal of these designs, interpretation of epidemiological evidence and application of epidemiological evidence to public health practice.

Those individuals with an interest in public health and the importance of epidemiology in public health.
This module is mandatory for the MA/PgD/PgC Professional Practice: Integrated Care and is an optional module for the MSc Advanced Clinical Practice and MSc Advanced Clinical Practice (Degree Apprenticeship). It is also offered as a stand alone CPD module.

The history, principles and some key concepts in public health will be explored in detail, in addition to examination of the role of health needs assessment for assessing the health needs of a population and how to undertake a health needs assessment. The module also introduces and explores epidemiology. The core principles of epidemiology are discussed as well as key measures and terminology. Students will be introduced to the different types of epidemiological study designs and will develop their critical appraisal skills of these study designs. Interpretation of epidemiological evidence, surveillance and key uses of epidemiological evidence in public health will also be covered.

The main skills gained, upon successful completion of the module, are how to undertake a health needs assessment and critical appraisal of epidemiological study designs.

Public health is a very important aspect both in the UK and globally. Undertaking this module will enable students to gain an understanding of public health and epidemiology which may provide a grounding for related further study in the future and may be useful in a professional context.
