Overview

Currently the NHS is facing a number of big challenges. Most areas of the service are running well but hospital, A&E and GP services are seeing signs of strain. Some of the main reasons for the service reaching this crisis point are an aging population, the negative impact of lifestyle factors, change in public expectations, more people visiting A&E departments, rising costs of services and advances in medicine and technology. In order to meet these demands the NHS needs proactive workers with imagination and creativity who can grasp the nature of the organizational objectives and adapt them rapidly to emerging situations and contingencies. On the other hand, the NHS want their workers to pick up weak signals, be able to deal with complexity, and be resilient and highly reliable. This can be achieved when workers perceive and pursue specific opportunities of finding the will and energy to add value to their work experience, making the necessary investments in terms of commitment and trust and becoming open to learning. Therefore, by restoring a sense to work (Weick, 1995) and introducing spaces for reflexivity and thought on what one does, and on why one does it, is vital.

Aims of the Module

This module will focus on reflexivity and its meaning in the context of personal and professional development. The module will provide the student the space and opportunity to acknowledge and explore their contributions to a challenging working environment. The module will specifically

  • Explore the current tensions of the working environment and its effect on personal wellbeing and professional practice.
  • Explore reflection and reflexivity within professional practice.
  • Explore the emergence of reflexivity and mindfulness within the lexicon of professional practice.
  • Explore how reflexivity affects personal and professional development.
